Animal welfare is considered a high-priority issue because of its massive scale, and because it’s an extremely neglected cause. Because so much animal suffering is caused by humans, there are very manageable ways to lessen it. By reducing or eliminating factory farms, lobbying for more animal-friendly government policies, and developing alternatives to animal products, we can vastly reduce the amount of animal suffering in the world.

The Global Health and Wellbeing Fund directs funding to highly effective organisations that are working to improve human wellbeing. When you donate to this fund, the Giving What We Can research team pools your money with contributions from other donors and allocates it quarterly, working with evaluators and grantmakers they know are best suited to maximise the financial impact.

Although we are moving away from the ‘one tree planted for every book sold’ initiative to focus our donations on more effective causes, we are continuing to fulfil the legacy of that promise in books that still carry that message. During this period we planted 60,000 trees through a newer initiative that offers greater levels of measurability and accountability.

GiveDirectly is a charity founded in 2008 that provides unconditional cash transfers to households in extreme poverty. Their belief is that people living in poverty deserve the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives – cash enables that choice.

This is a charity we usually support through their children’s home, however, when we heard there were some families still living under tarpaulins in a remote village, following an earthquake in Nepal that didn't get any real media attention, we donated funds to help rebuild their homes and school.

Our donation this period went solely to just one necessity – food. As the home has taken on new residents, and the older children are not yet ready to fly the nest, the everyday bills become more critically important.
