The “dark arts” is an exploration of images mainly associated with mortality – concerning issues most people prefer to leave hidden in the shadows; in the ground.

However, if you were to look deeper, there is often a peaceful mindfulness to be found, as the artist seeks out what is not only hidden in the earth, but also hidden in the mind. If you venture out of your comfort zone to appreciate the images by the fantastic artists in this book, you can see what lies beneath, making it possible to grow closer to the truth of us all.

Francisco Garcés, otherwise known as Dibujante Nocturno, is a professional illustrator from the Canary Islands, Spain, who creates art with a dark aesthetic reminiscent of the drama of Greek epics. Specializing in the design of fantastical creatures, he is an extremely passionate artist with a love of the fantasy genre that has followed him since he was a young child. Creating personal work is something he has never stopped doing as he considers it fundamental to his wellbeing, and sees sharing that work with others as an integral part of his creative way of life. Alongside crafting deeply personal projects, he produces commissions for clients based in the gaming industries.
Hugo Award winner Abigail Larson specialises in dark fantasy illustration using a unique mix of traditional and digital media. Her clients include Netflix Animation, Disney Publishing, Sideshow Collectibles, Syfy, Universal, Titan Comics, Llewellyn Worldwide, DC Comics, and Dark Horse. Abigail has illustrated three tarot decks: The Dark Wood Tarot, The Nightmare Before Christmas Tarot, and The Horror Tarot.
