The Unreal games engine is a hugely versatile system that has been used to power a variety of best-selling video games. In The Unreal Game Engine, environment artist Andrew Finch looks at how to create game levels from scratch using the free Unreal Development Kit, starting with modeling the environment. He then addresses the two different ways in which you can create accessories for your scene – modeling in 3ds Max and importing them, or creating them directly in UDK – before adding textures and lighting. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a level designer and wanted some practical experience, then look no further than The Unreal Game Engine.

good

It's very good book with a overview and a fast getting started on Unreal and then you can jump inside the action... in fact after a very good introduction the book show you how to assemble and create the scene (basic and advanced) also you can learning 'how to modelling/unwrap' the geometry from another 3d package for this sector (games/unreal engine rendering). Finally I advise thi s book to all person want start quickly with Unreal or in this sector and need a good workflow for working on it.

Excellent place to Start!

Getting hold of this book helped me gain a better understanding of the ins and outs of working with Unreal than I ever previously did following lots of badly-made online videos! A lot of the concepts and information featured here is still relevant for Unreal Engine 4 users as well, very helpful as I recently upgraded to it!All in all a great book to learn from, not just about using Unreal, but also some useful tutorials on assert creation in 3DS Max as well. Highly recommended!

Great introduction

For someone who is just beginning to learn the program, this book is great. It explains what you should do, but also why you do it, and how. This means you get an in-depth understanding of the level creation process. The different chapters also focus on different aspects of level creation, which means the book covers a broad variety of subjects. I can't speak for more experienced game artists, but for me this book was perfect.
