About the Author
After attending the Center for Arts and Technology, Gavin Goulden moved west to begin his career in the video games industry. Gavin began his career as a generalist for Magellan Interactive, then moved on to Piranha Games to work on multiple first-person titles. After years of working with Piranha, Gavin decide to take the leap and become a full-time freelance artist. It was during this time that he was able to dabble in multiple styles and genres, contributing to titles such as: Dragon Age, FEAR 2, Rock Band 2, Damnation, Fallen Empire: Legions (now Legions: Overdrive), and many other unannounced projects. Feeling the need to be part of a team again, Gavin joined Blue Castle Games/Capcom Vancouver as a character artist on the titles The Bigs 2 and Dead Rising 2. After completing work with Capcom, Gavin moved on to Irrational Games in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was a character artist on Bioshock Infinite.

"Any artist would be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive and easy-to-understand character creation tutorial than The Swordmaster by Gavin Goulden. You often hear artists throw terms around like "I wish I could download your brain” or "I want all your powers” - well this is as good as it gets. From base mesh creation right through to final presentation, everything is documented here in an easy-to-digest format. Beginners and seasoned professionals alike will be referring to this book for years to come." JON TROY NICKEL | Lead Character Artist - Trion Worlds

He's garnered attention for achieving high placements in some of the most revered art contests in the world, and the quality of his work always seems to be a step ahead of the rest of the industry. Perfect and surprising

Whether you are new to these apps, want to learn new methods or simply wish to discover how a professional creates amazing art, this is the book for you. Incredible value for money, its stock, print and layout are sublime. The book goes into detail step by step, but not so much that you are left holding it and not your stylus/mouse. Great insights on workflow and more than a few clever and surprising tricks. I thoroughly recommend this release to anyone considering upping their game in computer graphics, modelling and artistic limits. And of course, the price is outstanding...

Worth it

The whole book is a step by step tutorial for creating a fully armored, highly detailed game character from base mesh (in 3DS Max) to high poly model (in Zbrush) and then to low poly game-ready model (back in 3DS Max) plus texturing and rigging. Bear in mind that its not for an absolute beginner, its for the intermediate 3D artist who knows his way around 3DS Max and Zbrush who wants to learn the process for creating a game character. Very easy to understand explanations and with dozens of colored photos of the steps involved.Got my copy for US$5 but the quality of the book itself is worth more. Printing and paper quality of the cover and the pages are top notch. Feels like a coffee table book minus the hard cover.

Great purchace

A very nicely written book for those looking to create a full character ready for use. I'd say it requires a little basic knowledge of Zbrush and 3ds max so a complete beginner might be a tiny bit overwhelmed, but anyone looking to deep dive on their first time will be welcome here. There are a couple of zbrush areas that skip over and will require possibly more practice than a beginner posses, but for the 5 I spent, this is fantastic value for money.
